It was a great morning for racing on Sunday in Aberdeenshire. I have never until now managed to race at Knockburn due to clashes with other racing commitments I’ve had over the years. I’m very glad I was able to make the start line this year; what a stunning place to race triathlon!

The venue has a cracking little loch that has been purpose built for activities such as triathlon, and has a nice shallow depth throughout the swim course, which I am sure gives a lot of less confident swimmers a bit more sense of safety – it’ always nice to know your feet can reach the bottom of needs be I think!

The bike course felt more or less like a closed road loop, such was the lack of traffic – the joys of being out in the country good and proper! – The loch site has a distinct ‘middle of nowhere’ feel which I love. You certainly don’t get that too often these days with the increasingly popularity of our sport and need for city centre race sites.

Finally onto the run route, which was essentially a cross country course! I think someone had a bit of fun designing that 2.5k of ups, downs and twisty/grassy obstacles! Excellent stuff.

Fantastic views stretching into the wide open distance of the hills and beyond. Some 200 athletes filled the transition area besides the loch.

‘Where’s Wally?’ springs to mind… it wasn’t even cold in there either. Summer has arrived!
